Operations underway in Perth

It’s been a while since my last post. Since then, we’ve moved to Perth, WA. One of Perth’s big claims to fame is that it’s the most isolated capital in the world. What interests me more is that I’m less isolated from surf, and can conveniently get a wave in before work.
Surfboard building operations took a hiatus while we settled into our new lives in WA, but now the work shop is back up and running.

Last Tasmanian Course – places available

Need a new board fast? Don't buy one, come to our course on the 12th December

It’s very late notice for most of you to drop whatever you’re doing to come and play in the workshop, but on the off chance anyone is keen and available, there have been some places recently open up in my next surfboard course.

The course is being held at the Mountain River workshop, Monday 12 December through to Sunday 18th (plus a few extra days if you want to stick around for glassing and varnishing).

This summer we’ll be moving operations over the Perth WA, so this will be the last Tasmanian based workshop for a while.

You’ll need to let me know very soon if you want to come along.

December course: Monday 12th-Sunday 18th

Himalayan Cedar, ready to be milled for your surfboard

Finally we are able to announce the next surfboard building course! There were many distractions that got in the way, but we’ve finally got things together for the middle of December 2011.

The course will start on Monday 12th December, and run through until Sunday 18th. If you want to stay on to glass and/or varnish your board, we will be doing that in early the next week.

Bookings are currently open, but get in quick to secure a place. Be sure to let me know what kind of board you want to build so we can get templates built up for you.

First Course served

Jim and Adrian have spent a week with me, knee deep in wood shavings putting their new boards together. They each chose to put a 6′ fish together. They’re both coming back to do some final shaping and sanding, but they look fantastic already. It’s fair to presume that they are the first Himalayan Cedar surfboards in the world. I’ll post some finished board images soon. For now, the boys at work:

Course details—Hobart, 6th to 10th June

School holidays are coming, and so is a surfboard course. I have scheduled a board building course for the first week of June: Monday 6th through to Friday 10th. The start of winter is a fine time to spend in the workshop, and hopefully aligns with the coming of the winter swells as well as school holidays.

The cost is $1000 per student, which includes all tools and materials. By the end of the course you will have a surfboard ready for glassing.

The course will be held in Mountain River, half an hour south of Hobart. We will be running from 9am to 5pm (some day we will finish a bit later). Students are welcome to camp on our riverside property during the course. We will cook lunches on the outdoor barbecue or inside, depending on the weather.

A $400 deposit is required to secure your place, and to get templates made up for your chosen board. The balance can be paid by the start of the course.

If you are keen to be involved, contact me soon as places are nearly full.

Win a fish!

I recently built a board for the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens from one of their old trees, a Himalayan Cedar (Cedrus Deodar), which they will be raffling off soon. Details of the raffle will be announced ASAP. Keep an eye out here or post a comment/email if you’d like to stay in the loop about the raffle.

The Himalayan Cedar had some awesome grain patterns, and was heavier than our usual Western Red Cedar, so I shaped a classic fish that would appreciate and make best use of this extra weight. I was so happy with how it looks, it ended up as the poster child for the ‘Boards – Fish’ page of this site.

I took it out for a sneaky test ride the other night when the Hobart points lit up and, well, I’m hoping I’m allowed to buy a raffle ticket. I’ll be sorry to see it go!

Master Classes and kits

Very soon we will have surfboard kits for sale. They will include all timber and glass supplies needed to craft your own board. Details and prices are still to be announced, but there will be an option for custom shaped kits, or off the shelf models.

As of May we will be running surfboard masterclasses. As with the kits, details are still to be confirmed. By the end of the course you will have a board ready to be glassed. Off the shelf shapes, or custom shapes for a small premuim.

Contact us to register your interest in courses here in Tasmania or on the mainland.

With the courses and kits, we provide the option of using your own timber or copying an existing board if you have something special you would like to use or replicate.
